Focus on skill-based education
With each passing year, the discussion concerning our education system is turning into stronger. With the world coming closer and people moving in and out of countries, the positive and negative features of every education system are now there to try and test for people. It was a couple of decades back that the people were not very concerned about the education system and followed whatever was offered by educational institutes. But today people are concerned and are questioning the methodology and ways of teaching. If we consider the case of India in particular, there are several boards functional with CBSE, ICSE, State Boards and IB boards. The main focus of various boards may vary. The parents, teachers, and students normally go along with the flow when it comes to these boards.
But many times it also depends on how the school goes ahead with the curriculum. Many times the education system focuses on academic excellence and makes the kids swallow a huge chunk of information. Do we want the kids to become smart and sensible citizens or do we want to make them a living encyclopedia? The education system sometimes does not allow time and space for creative and analytical thinking. With the constant bombardment of exams and tests, the kids do not get breathing space. There is pressure before kids to perform and study.
Sometimes too much homework load does not help and can backfire. An ideal pre-school or school should focus on the overall growth of the kid. Mere academic focus or stress on the curriculum will not help. There needs to be a balance in all aspects. The stress level among kids is increasing due to peer pressure. Wouldn’t it be good if children are thought about Decision making, Strength of mind and social skills on a priority? These are the skills that will eventually help them to cope up with the situations in life better. Basics should always be a focus, but other aspects should also co-exist. As far as the secondary and higher secondary schools are concerned, the practical aspect of the curriculum needs to be given more focus. Also, compulsory internships and on-field experiences are very important. The special efforts are required to take for making a strong educational base for the children, which is going to help in the long run.
